Changing Your Address in Illinois

Whether you've moved to Illinois from out of state or have moved within the state, you must change your address with the Office of the Secretary of State (SOS) Driver Services Department and Vehicle Services Department.

On this page you'll find information on how to report an address change, and how to change your address on your IL driver's license, ID card, and vehicle registration.

Change Your Address with IL Driver Services

Within 10 days of an address change in Illinois, you need to update your address on file with the IL SOS Driver Services Department. This will change your records associated with your driver's license or ID card.

You can change your address online, in person, or by mail.

You are not required to purchase a corrected IL driver's license or ID card. If you want a new card that shows your new address, see the “Replace Your IL Driver's License or ID' section below.

Online

To change your address on your driver's license/ID records online, visit the IL SOS Address Change website.

Select “Update your Driver's License or ID Card' and provide your:

  • IL driver's license or identification card number.
  • Social Security number (SSN).
  • New address.

You must complete a different online Address Change Form if you:

  • Live in a city with a population of less than 3,500 people and only have a P.O. box.
  • Live in IL, but your post office is out of state.
  • Are changing your permanent address to an out-of-state location.

By Mail

Address

To change your address on your IL driver's license/ID card records by mail, write a letter that includes your:

  • Name.
  • IL driver's license/ID card number.
  • Old address.
  • New address.

In Person

You can change your address on your IL driver's license or ID in person by visiting your local IL Secretary of State office.

You'll have the option to purchase a corrected driver's license or ID that shows your new address. See the “Replace Your IL Driver's License or ID' section below.

Replace Your IL Driver's License or ID

If you want your new address to appear on your IL driver's license or identification card, you must additionally apply for a corrected card in person. You cannot replace your license or ID online or by mail.

Visit an Illinois SOS office and bring:

  • Your current IL driver's license or ID.
  • Proof of your IL residence (1 document), such as a:
    • Bank statement.
    • Mortgage or rent agreement.
    • Utility bill.
      • Visit the SOS website for a complete list of accepted documents.
  • Payment. (See the “Fees to Change Your IL Address' section below.)

Change Your Address with IL Vehicle Services

Within 10 days of changing your address in Illinois, you will need to update your vehicle registration records on file with the IL Vehicle Services.

To receive your vehicle registration renewal notice in the mail, you must update your address.

You can change your address online, in person, or by mail.

You do not need to correct your vehicle title or purchase a corrected registration card when your address changes.

Online

To change your address on your vehicle records online, visit the IL SOS Address Change website.

Select “Update your Vehicle Registration(s)' and:

  • Choose one of the following vehicle records address changes:
    • Verified.
    • Unverified.
    • Address Change with Renewal.
  • Provide your registration ID and PIN or vehicle information, depending on your selection.
  • Provide your new address.

NOTE: Both verified and renewal address changes require a payment. (Please see the “Fees to Change Your IL Address' section below.)

By Mail

To change the address on your Illinois vehicle records by mail, write a letter that includes your:

  • Name.
  • License plate number.
  • Old address.
  • New address.

Fees to Change Your IL Address

It will cost you the following fees for updated documents showing your new address in Illinois:

The Address My Home

  • Driver's license: $5.
  • Identification card (18 years old or older): $10.
    • Duplicate: $20.
  • Identification card (under 18 years old): $5.
    • Duplicate: $5.
  • Registration card: $3.

NOTE: Renewal fees will vary.

New Illinois Residents

If you've moved to Illinois, you'll need to:

  • Apply for an IL driver's license within 90 days.
  • Register your vehicle in Illinois within 30 days.

IL Voter Registration Address Change

To change your address on your Illinois voter registration, you'll need to complete a Voter Registration Application (Form SBE R-19) and either:

  • Take it to an IL SOS office, which will forward your application.
    OR
  • Mail or take your application in person to an IL County Clerk or Board of Election Commissioners office.

You must live in the voting precinct for 30 days prior to the next election to be eligible to vote.
