Jan 21, 2020 Update your iPhone 5 to resume using App Store, iCloud, email, web and other services As at 3 November 2019, iPhone 5 requires an iOS update to maintain accurate GPS location and to continue to use functions that rely on correct date and time, including App Store, iCloud, email and web browsing. Oct 28, 2019 If you don't update your iPhone 5 to iOS 10.3.4 by November 3, you'll have to connect your phone to a Mac or PC to restore it, as Apple says that iCloud backup and over-the-air updates will not. The iPhone 5 fully supports all features on iOS 8 and iOS 9 and it supports iOS 10, also, but it does not support the Raise to Wake and Rich Notifications features. The iPhone 5 does not support iOS 11 or later versions of the iOS at all.

Update your device's software

If you didn't update your iPhone 5 before 3 November 2019, it can no longer maintain accurate GPS location or use functions that rely on correct date and time, including App Store, iCloud, email and web browsing. You need to back up and restore using a Mac or PC in order to update, because over-the-air software updates and iCloud Backup no longer work.

Check your device's iOS version

After you update your iPhone 5, you can check to make sure that your device has updated successfully:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General, then tap About.
  3. Look for the number next to Software Version.

The updated software version number should be 10.3.4.
